Kockums commenced business in Australia in 1962 with the acquisition of Alfred T Harman in Port Melbourne, importing and manufacturing excavators.  In 1971 the business relocated to Campbellfield, Victoria, when the range of Kockums sawmilling equipment and dump trucks was introduced and the tanker business relocated from Sydney.

The expansion of the business was quite rapid resulting in the construction of a new manufacturing facility, also in Campbellfield, in 1981.  The administration building includes a design and drawing office with computer support, and the manufacturing plant is well equipped for the fabrication of transport equipment incorporating a large shot blast booth and heated paint booth.  Efficient production planning and scheduling and the employment of skilled tradesmen along with the best available facilities allow Kockums to maintain high standards of engineering and workmanship.

In September 1986 the business of Kockums Industries (Aust) Pty Ltd was purchased by John Shearer (Holdings) Limited in South Australia.  John Shearer is one of Australia's oldest agricultural machinery manufacturers, having been established in 1877.  John Shearer himself was famous for the invention of the 'stump jump plough' which revolutionised Australian agriculture.

In December 1987, the Arrowcrest Group Pty Ltd took over the parent company. 

1993 heralded 31 years of business in Australia and the delivery of the 1000th tanker built in Australia by Kockums.
